Alumnus forges network links
Alumnus John Raciti started the Monash Alumni LinkedIn Group in 2007.
Six years ago, long before most people in Australia had thought to set up their own LinkedIn profile, John Raciti (BACraft 1997) saw the US-based online networking platform’s potential to connect with the 280,000 Monash graduates that live and work across the world.
Today, LinkedIn’s network has 225 million members from more than 200 countries and their mission is simple: to connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful.
“I saw LinkedIn as a way to digitise the traditional roman forums we had on campus,” said Mr Raciti.
The Monash University alumni group is now one of the largest LinkedIn alumni networks in Australia with more than 10,500 members.
“The greatest challenge has been pleasing all members. I’ve enjoyed running the group because I know I am making a difference – from providing alumni with opportunities for career advancement to capturing the myriad of alumni voices – but I want to continue to push for excellence in this digital age.
“There was nothing like it online in Australia six years ago. I saw that it was a growing trend in the US and actually it’s proven to be an effective way to network with potential employers, professional connections and an active way for graduates and businesses to communicate on a corporate level.
“The group aims to offer front line support to alumni right at the coal face – at their computer desks in the workplace. It provides an informal way for us to communicate with each other and allow us to gain an insight into current market trends and professional assistance.
“By connecting with their peers, alumni are making an investment in future connections,” he said.
So what does John do when he’s not online?
“I enjoy the company of my three lovely daughters and my charity work for those in need.”
