Order of St John over Malta

THE M1LITIA LIST OF 1419-20 – The Order of St John built the Ħamrija Tower close to this maħras post. The Carendi and Casal Leu contingent according to the Militia list just mentioned, comprised 27 men. The list gives the names and surnames of these militiamen, possibly revealing the first identifiable villagers of this locality. These were Chiccu Camilleri, Cola Habdille,Micheli Camilleri, Aguistinu Calabru, Salvu Busaliba lu Sigeui, Nuzu Busalib, Chuchi Cassar, JohanniHabedi, Franciscu Maniuni, Bernardu Delfe, ColaGugla, Cola Hajede, Perricuni Bugeja, Cannu Spiteri,Cola Maniuni, Antoni Maniuni, Thumeu Habdille,Gualteri Actasi, Bernardu Bugeja, Perellu Bugeja,Antoni Bugeja, Marcu Bunichi, Fidericu Cagege, Ramundu Habdille, Custanzu Consiglu, Pinu Habdilleand Andria Maniuni.

In August 1510, the senior Giovanni Cumbo was again appointed as one of the accathapani for the year 1510-1511, alongside Giovanni Cagege. As in the preceding case, this appointment was made ex gracia, meaning that it overrode any local nominations.

5 October 1517 A council meeting elects the following deputies responsible for the procurement and distribution of the island’s grain: Joannes Zammit, Joannes Cumbo, Joanne Bitrio and Joannes Cagege.

As noted in the previous section, the elder Giovanni Cumbo was appointed as one the accathapani alongside Giovanni Cagege between 1510-11, and appears again here in a similar role.
